François Brunelle began photographing look-alikes at age 50 after realizing he resembled “Mr. Bean.”
Now 73, he has captured over 250 pairs of doppelgängers, earning international acclaim for his black-and-white portraits.
The documentary The Doppelganger Project follows Brunelle during his project’s 25th year as he photographs diverse pairs—including Jewish and Muslim doubles in Israel and only-children in China. The film also highlights his collaboration with The Innocence Project to demonstrate the fallibility of eyewitness testimony. As Brunelle works toward publishing his first art book, the project ultimately explores identity and human connection, illustrating his belief that “we are all basically the same.”
